As we mature, we will face traumatic events in our lives. It is not a matter of if, but how many and how soon we will face one or more. It could be going through a natural disaster like a tornado or hurricane, facing a serious illness like cancer, being caught up in a war as a soldier, a car or motorcycle accident, or the death of a loved one.
Like many of you I have already experienced several traumatic events. The traumatic events in our lives are each different in detail but similar in effect. The more traumatic they are, the more likely we are to ask others to pray for us and the more likely we are to turn to others and God for comfort.
When we are hurting, when we need comfort, we do not run from God, but we run to Him. Instinctively we know He is the source of all comfort. When we run to Him, we can stop trying to figure out why all this has or is happening to us. We can be strong to deal with traumatic events because we are relying on His strength and not our own.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV
