Who was your best friend growing up? My best friend lived across the street from me. We did so much together. We spent time hiking in the woods, walking around town, and playing all kinds of games together.
Sad to say, I went off to college and we lost contact with one another. Through the years I have developed friendships with several other people. Some of those friendships had a positive influence in my life and some not so much. Choosing the right friends matters in one’s life. I can think of some people who were in my larger group of “friends.” They made some bad choices and are still suffering the consequences.
What a difference it makes to have followers of Jesus in my close circle of friends. We can encourage each other when we sense the other person needs some encouragement. We can stop in, call, or even text each other when we need advice in resolving a difficult situation.
Having a friend that will accept you the way you are is priceless. That is so freeing in a relationship. A friend loves you the way you are, not the way they want you to be. True friends are hard to find. They only want the best.
The hymn by Alan Jackson is so true. “ What a friend we have in Jesus All our sins and griefs to bear… Can we find a friend so faithful Who will all our sorrows share?”
“Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you also are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11NASB
