When I was young, I used to do a lot of ice fishing. I don’t remember how cold it was. I do remember all the fun I had. My parents even took me ice fishing when I was just able to walk. That reminds me of an event that took place on one of those early adventures on the ice that I will write about in an upcoming blog. It shaped so much of my life for years to come.
Anyway, before we would head out on the ice, we would check to make sure what the ice conditions were like. Could we drive our car out on the ice, or would we have to walk out? If we drove out, could we drive around freely or did we have to stick to the path where previous cars went?
My parents, later my brother, and even later myself wanted to be 100% confident the ice was at least strong enough to support us, if we had to walk out. Anything less than being 100% sure the ice would hold us would have been foolish.
Being anything less than 100% confident in who we trust our souls with for eternity would be just as foolish. For years I trusted in my ability to keep rules and regulations. No confidence there. When I stopped trusting myself and trusted Jesus, it all changed.
“Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.” Psalm 62:2 NIV
