Let’s Go Fishing
I was sitting at my desk at church Monday morning, and I received this text. “Hi Paul. Just wondering if you have any interest in going perch fishing this afternoon. I am going to Oconto, and we could meet up.”
It was the beginning of the week, but it was a Monday. I had not taken a Monday off to go fishing in several years. After rearranging my schedule a bit, we set a time to meet. It was a beautiful fall day to go fishing. The winds were calm. It was warm and sunny.
It was a spectacular day on the water. Besides, a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work. But it was anything but a bad day of fishing. We caught eighteen beautiful perch. Here is the topper. I am 76 years old. Over those many years I have personally caught over a thousand perch but last Monday I caught my largest perch ever. It was a day I will never forget. There was a day Jesus’ disciples never forgot.
After Jesus rose from the dead His disciple’s lacked direction so Peter said, I am going fishing. Several other of the disciples said. Sounds like a great idea. We will come too. Off they went. They fished all night and caught nothing. Someone from the shore shouted, try over there. They did, and they could not lift their nets because they were so full. Immediately they knew that someone was Jesus.
What’s the lesson here? There are many but if I were one of those disciples I would have learned one lesson for sure. It pays to listen to the advice of Jesus. He knows!
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” John 10:27-28 NIV
