Just Out of Reach
Have you ever gone grocery shopping and the item you want is on a shelf that is just beyond what you can reach? Or there is something in your cupboard that you can just touch with your finger but are not able to put your hand around and grab it? What do you do? Do you ask for help, get some form stepping stool, or just leave the item where it is? I have done all three at various times.
There are a number of things in my spiritual life that want to make a part of my life but no matter how hard I reach for them they are just out of reach for me. It could be patience, giving thanks at all times, or praying without ceasing.
I need to understand this. I cannot wish myself taller so I can reach what is out of reach. In fact, as I grow older, I find out I am growing shorter, which sounds like an oxymoron. Just as I need to ask for help, which hurts my pride, I need to humble myself and ask God to help me reach when I see I need in my spiritual life.
Don’t keep reaching for what is out of reach in our own strength. We will never be able to quite grasp it. Humble ourselves and ask God to help us. He is waiting to be asked and will give us what we need to reach what we desire.
“My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:2 NIV
