The Body of Christ
My body has a lot of parts that need to work in unison for it to function optimally. If my little toe hurts, my entire body hurts. Our bodies are amazing. I thank God that mine is still working as good as it does.
The Apostle Paul used our physical bodies to illustrate the mystery of the spiritual body of Christ. The body of Christ has a head, Jesus Christ. It is made up of many parts. Paul tells us the body of Christ is diverse. People of every race and language are a part of it. He tells us no part of the body of Christ is insignificant. We may have different functions, but we are dependent on the other to function at our best.
We get all that, but here is the thought I want us to ponder today. How do we treat our own bodies? We clean them, exercise them, and check them over. Why? We understand how important each part is.
Our Christian brothers and sisters matter. No one is more or less important than the other. How we treat them matters. Let me put it bluntly. If my toe hurts, I don’t ignore the pain or worse take out a knife and cut it off. I find out why it is hurting. If my brother or sister is hurting, I need to do my part to be a source of healing, not ignoring or worse, reinjuring them.
“From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” Ephesians 4:16 NIV
