We’re Going Down
It was a peaceful early morning as four of us were headed out on Lake Michigan to do some salmon fishing. We were about one mile offshore when I heard this terrible sound. I had no idea what it was. I put the boat into neutral and it stopped. I put it back into gear and the sound grew worse. One of my friends, who spent time in the Coast Guard, immediately lifted open the floor hatch, to check out the engine. He shouted, “shut the motor off.” It was more serious than just a blown engine. The propellor shaft had ripped loose from the hull of the boat and left gaping holes, where it was fastened. We began to take on water. I called in a “May Day” to the Coast Guard as he began shouting orders. “Get me a screwdriver.” “Get me some rags.”
Boats who heard my distress call began to come along side, in case we had to abandon ship. I cannot swim, but amazingly I never feared drowning during the entire time. The reason was, I had someone on board who knew how to plug holes in a sinking ship with a screwdriver and rags. We threw a line to a boat that was beside us and he towed us to shore. Without the quick thinking of my friend, we would have gone down.
When we face those scary moments in life, we do not need to fear. We have someone “onboard” our lives that can keep our ship from going down, Jesus.
“For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” Isaiah 41:13 NIV
