Tree Roots
While in Alaska I got to stand next to a giant Sitka spruce tree. It stood close to 320 feet tall, and its trunk was massive. There are thousands of different sizes, shapes, and varieties of trees on this planet. Amazingly what is so diverse above ground is so similar below ground. One tree may have needles, another leaves. Some produce pinecones, others produce acorns, apples, pears, peaches, walnuts, figs, mangos, cashews, or cinnamon. Despite the endless variety above ground, they all have the same basic root structure. They have a tap root which provides stability, with many lateral and sinker roots from which they get their water and nutrients. Whatever you see or get to harvest above ground is dependent upon what you don’t see below ground. The better the root system, the better the soil, and the better the water supply, the healthier the tree.
The Bible has a lot to say about roots and our spiritual health. We are rooted in Jesus Christ. What a beautiful picture. Jesus Christ is our source of living water. He is our source of life. We get our “nutrients” from Him for spiritual growth. When our roots grow deep, wide, and secure in Him we bear fruit abundantly. If we neglect Jesus, the Bible says we are like a tree that withers up and dies for lack of water and nutrients. Spread your roots deep and wide into Jesus and soak up all the blessings He has to give you!
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. 8 They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8 NIV
