Innocent Children, Simple Joys
The Fiery Haitian Sun dropped behind the mountains as I looked to the valley below; simple homes, gardens planted in hope of rain, children playing in the dirt, shouts of fun and laughter. I raised my arms, a small ball in each hand and two between my feet. I knew I wouldn’t be alone for long.
“Madame Linda, Madame Linda, Bali, Bali!” They came running and the games began. As the balls and cheers sailed back and forth across the fence, the players increased as a few older children joined us.
We played until I was worn out! By now all the balls were back with me as I explained “We go back to America tomorrow.” The ones who understood frowned and shook their heads “No.” But I encouraged them, “Map Vini” (We are coming back)
I tossed each ball over the fence and watched as I walked down the hill. Delighted squeals, running feet. Tiny, grimy hands lifted the balls from the ground. A new game had begun.
Innocent childhood, simple joys, isn’t that what our heavenly Father wanted for us? James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”
As the Haitian children delighted in the simple gift we gave, let us take notice, unwrap and give thanks to the Lord for the abundant gifts He gives us each day.
