A Hungry Turkey
I was walking by my living room window one morning and saw a large flock of turkey under my bird feeders. The ground was covered with frozen, packed down snow, but it didn’t stop the turkey from trying to get food. I have never seen turkey scratch so hard before to get the bird seed that had fallen from the feeders. Their claws left indentations in the hardened snow, leaving obvious signs of their efforts.
It caused me to think about myself and God’s Word. Do I “dig” as fervently as those turkey to get into God’s Word daily? Do I spend time reading God’s Word and committing myself to prayer? Or am I content to have a small passage of scripture pop up on my phone day after day, counting that as my time with God? Sure, there are days when things happen that my time in the bible is shortened by appointments, unplanned events, and my mismanaging my time. However, II Timothy 3:16 tells us “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” I stood there, watching the turkey, convicted of not digging into God’s Word every day and spending meaningful time with Him.
You know, I have heard that turkeys aren’t very bright. Well, I know they taught me something very valuable.
