The Glory of God
This month the night sky has been in the news. The ability to see Mercury and Venus close together a few days before the total lunar eclipse on March 13/14 was spectacular!
This got me thinking back to the summer before my senior year in high school. My family was gathered around our TV on July 20, 1969, to see American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first humans ever to land on the moon! Fast forward to almost 56 years later, as today I’m reading about how many of the early astronauts had strong Christian faith. Before Armstrong and Aldrin emerged from the Eagle, Aldrin took out his Bible, silver chalice, and sacramental bread and wine. His first act on the moon was to celebrate communion.
Six months before the moon landing, on Christmas Eve1968, the Apollo 8 crew, William Anders, Jim Lovell, and Commander Frank Borman turned their eyes to earth and their thoughts to the One who formed it. In awe of the Creator, they delivered the famous Christmas Eve broadcast from space by reading the first 9 verses of Genesis 1.
There are many more stories from the early astronauts that could be told here. In the years following the moon landings, we currently have the International Space Station, where over 200 space walks have occurred. All the Christian astronauts have added a different perspective to Psalm 19. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. 3 They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. 4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”
