An Angel in Walmart
A few years ago, I was in Walmart and heard a woman screaming, “Just wait until you get home?” My heart was pounding one hundred miles a minute as I raced to the area of distress. I turned into the troubled aisle and witnessed a frazzled looking mom repeating angry words as she stared at her sweet, exhausted two year old daughter who was sitting in the cart crying. Next to the unhappy mom stood a tired, looking ten year old girl with clenched fists. She was yelling at the sobbing toddler. I practically stood on their cart and they did not notice me. I coughed loudly to no avail. My heart sunk. I said a quick, desperate prayer. “Lord help us. I do not know what to do.”
In a flash, an elderly, refined gentleman attired in a tweed top coat, dress pants, shiny shoes and a fancy, dress hat decorated with a little red feather appeared in our aisle. His hair was thick and totally white. He appeared to be a gentleman who walked out of a British novel. His emerald green eyes danced as he winked at me and whispered, “It is going to be fine.” His steps were confident. His posture indicated he could be from royal descent. He approached the mom and her two daughters and kindly asked, “May I play a song for you?” Not waiting for a reply, he instantly pulled out a harmonica out of his breast pocket. He looked directly at the little girl and began playing a happy tune. The small child stared at him and began to smile. I was totally aware of the gentle energy in the aisle. Anger and frustration had turned into peace and comfort. After he finished his first melody, he looked at the older daughter and asked if he could play a song for her. She smiled and he began playing a lullaby tune just for her. He looked at the mom with such love and understanding. All negativity in her vanished. Her face was radiant with sweetness. She gave her little girl and other daughter a hug and said, “Wasn’t that nice.” The gentleman said, “Have a good day” and he walked away. I was in shock. What had I just witnessed? A miracle? What dignified man carries a harmonica in his pocket and why would he be shopping in Walmart?
A few seconds had passed and I realized he was gone, as well as, the mom and daughters. I literally ran with my cart down a couple aisles trying to find the man. I needed to talk to him. It seemed an eternity had passed and finally I spied him looking at a gallon of paint. He appeared to be a customer. He slowly turned toward me with a smile and lovingly winked at me. I smiled back and put my hand over my heart and mouthed, “Thank you!” He nodded in acknowledgement. I did not need to talk to him. I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt, my simple prayer, “Lord, help us” had been instantly answered.
