A Spring Cleaning
Home and Heart
As the days of March grow longer and warmer, the snow we Wisconsinites have been blessed with melts to show the blades of grass gradually changing to hues of green. Warming temperatures bring Spring rains. Soon we see the first flowers popping up from the thawing ground.
All our senses experience the refreshing changes in the newness of Spring, and we turn our attention to Spring Cleaning. We all have different tasks we do when we Spring Clean. No matter what our outward Spring Cleaning entails, we all need to take the time to Spring Clean our Heart.
Why Is Spring Cleaning our Heart so important? Our Heart is God’s Home. It doesn’t take long for our heart to become dusty, cluttered and dull when we neglect cleaning our heart. No matter how difficult it becomes to do our outward Spring Cleaning, we all can Spring Clean our Heart.
A pivotal Scripture for me has been Psalm 51:10. ESV Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Here are some steps for Spring Cleaning your heart:
1. First scan for big problems you might have overlooked. Take some time to think through the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:2–17. Are there any you’re not living out fully? Confess it—and ask God to sweep, or spiritually spring clean, your sin away.
2. The 2nd thing you can do is dust off your irritations. Are there people or things that annoy you? Ask yourself if there are things hidden in your heart that contributes to the problem. Let go of the negative things in your life and invite the positive ones in – like peace, hope, and love.
3. What is cluttering your days? What affects your relationship with God? TV, video games, selfish indulgences? What is your list? Fling those from your life.
4. Contemplate what is lacking. What we fail to do depletes our spiritual health as much as what we do wrong. Think of what more you can do to help others and live with spiritual well-being. God longs to purify you from your sins, to wash you and make your heart “whiter than snow” (Psalm 51:7) Take time to spiritual clean your heart.
