Don’t Turn Your Back
Yesterday we had high winds and lots of snow. There were moments when it was near white-out conditions outside our house.
We feed the birds on our deck. It is very relaxing watching the Slate Colored Juncos, the Cardinals, Morning Doves, and our one Downy woodpecker enjoy eating as we do the same. Because of the heavy snow and wind, we gave them extra food several times.
As I gazed out the window, I was astonished to see several morning doves and cardinals perched on a branch facing the blowing snow. My immediate thought was, why don’t they turn their backs to the wind. I even mentioned their posture to Monika. She quickly responded, “Because they are birds.”
I was embarrassed that I had not thought of that. Facing the wind and snow allowed them to stay warm. It just blew over their feathers. If they turned their backs on the bad weather, it would have ruffled their feathers. The wind and snow would have penetrated past their feathers and reached their tiny bodies.
There is a reason why fish swim upstream and birds face the wind. Perhaps there is a lesson in all that for us. It is better to face the obstacles in life head-on rather than turn our backs on them. Denying things in life will not make things better. It will only ruffle our feathers.
Face today head-on with God by your side knowing this. “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13 NIV
