Keep Our Eyes On The Prize
“Therefore, we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us; looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” Hebrews 12:1,2
My mother tells a humorous story of what happened because she got distracted and took her eyes off the task before her. This particular day she was ironing my father’s only suit pants; that he was to wear for an important meeting. But four children can be more than a handful. Distracted by one who spilt the milk she quickly got a towel to wipe it up; but forgot to pick up the iron off the pants. To her horror my father’s pants were burning and had a permanent iron mark down the front of the leg. My mother having a flare for humor handled the problem this way. She gathered the children, the burnt trousers and went to the barbershop where my father was getting a haircut. There she stood at the window, children beside her, holding up the ruined pants and crying. Her thinking, what man would yell in front of the barber on Main Street at a crying woman. Humorous and with a point.
The world is filled with distractions. As followers of Christ we can be assured our enemy will try to distract us. Each of us is running our personal race. A holy race. We are called out to live a life that gives glory to Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith. Let us keep our eyes on the prize. And someday we will hear, well done, good and faithful servant.
