You Are Free
I remember to this day sitting in grade school and looking out the window, daydreaming. I was never good at focusing on what the teacher was saying. Learning about the presidents or early American history was never my thing. I wanted to be free to go outside and play tag, catch, or basketball. When the bell rang at the end of the school day, I was free to do what I wanted to do.
That was one king of freedom. It is the kind of freedom we all look forward to. We look forward to when our workday ends and we are free to do what we need to do. We count down the days before we retire so we can be free from having to get up and go to work every day. Some may even look forward to the day their final child leaves home so they can be empty nesters.
The Bible talks about a different kind of freedom, spiritual freedom. Freedom from the power of sin over our lives. Sin is very confining, much like a classroom confines its students, or a factory confines its workers. However, Jesus sets us free from the power of sin in our lives. We have the freedom to use words that build others up, rather than tear others down. We have the freedom to love others, as God loves us. We have freedom to do and enjoy what God has made us for. We are free from our debt of sin. We are free forever!
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 NIV
