A Helping Hand
A few weeks ago, I was driving down a county road and I noticed a man walking along the side of the road. He mis- stepped and gently tumbled into a shallow ditch. He looked fine but I thought I better turn around and make sure. He was not as fine as he looked and needed a ride back to his home, which I was happy to do. You would have done the same.
We all know the parable of the “Good Samaritan.” It is easy to make excuses or find reasons not to lend a helping hand. Often the focus is on the one lending or not lending the helping hand. What about the one who received help?
Jesus often gave a helping hand to those in need. He did much more than pick up a man who had fallen. He healed the blind, he made the lame walk, and even raised the dead. Jesus helped those who were marginalized in society. He had no built-in prejudices and helped those who needed help.
One time He healed 10 lepers. What a joy must have filled their hearts to be clean of that awful disease. However, only one came back and thanked Him for what He had done. Today, be sure and say thanks to Jesus for all the ways He helps us every day. Without His help I would stay fallen and passed by in the ditches of life.
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1 NIV
