The Root
We needed to remove some shrubs around the church that were becoming unmanageable. The ground’s crew showed up with a skid steer and got to work. The first shrub was the hardest to remove. Once out of the ground it became obvious why it was so difficult to pull out by the roots. In the center of the root system was an amazing root. It was not as thick as you might imagine, but it was long, very long. That shrub which was only 10 feet high had a tap root that had to be 30 feet in length. That tap root reached way down into the soil and provided all the water that shrub needed even during the driest of times. No wonder it was so hardy.
As followers of Jesus, we need a tap root in our lives that reaches down deep when our lives seem to be drying up. That root is Jesus. Jesus strengthens us and keeps us upright when the winds of sin blow our way. He keeps our faith strong when winds of doubt want to blow us away. All we need to sustain us and fill us with joy, love, and thankfulness come from being rooted in Jesus.
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:6-7 NIV
