Clash of Cultures
Jesus said: “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.” Matt 5: 14-15
How are we at shining our light in today’s culture? I have a failure to confess that happened to me.
I was at the mall and a rap song came on that was heard throughout the store. The lyrics were repulsive and lewd, and it made me recoil inside. So much that I wanted to get out of the store and run back to the sanctuary of my home.
That evening in the quiet I felt the Lord speaking to me. Perhaps I could have engaged the clerk in conversation to shed the light of Jesus Christ in that moment. I could have let her know Jesus loved her and she was much too valuable to demean herself by taking in this vileness. I had to confess this for not standing up for righteousness and truth.
This example has been burned onto my heart in two ways. I, cannot run away from our culture that is dying from lack of Truth. And the only solid sanctuary in life does not come behind our closed doors; but is only found in the shelter of the Almighty.
Titus Brandsma who was martyred at Dachau Concentration Camp because of opposition to the Nazis wrote; “He who wants to win the world for Christ must have the courage to come in conflict with it.”
It is my prayer Lord, to take You wherever I go and shine the light of Your love and Truth to a world perishing in darkness. Help me to follow You, Jesus every moment.
