Teach Us To Number Our Days
I’m sure many of us have stood at a gravesite saying good-bye to a loved one or visited a cemetery to pay our respect for the life remembered. Without being ghoulish, reading tombstones can be interesting. Always etched in them is the date of birth, followed by a dash, then the date of death. I have seen some born in the late 1800’s and then died in the 1950’s. Some killed in battle in World War 1. Some standing tall and written in German language and weathered through the years. But what is universal to all the tombstones is the dash. The years between life and death. How were those years spent of each life of all who lived.
Psalm 90:10,12 states; “The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years.” “So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.” If we live to eighty years our days on earth are only 29,200 days. Give a few more for leap year. I had to do the math on this a few times because it seemed so short. But James 4:14 states “You are merely a vapor that is visible for a little while and then vanishes.” The good news is that the believer in Jesus will live forever in Him because of His death on the cross for our sins. Lord, help us to live each day for You. Our days are so few in light of eternity.
