Day 75
Read: Deuteronomy 13:1 – 16:17
Today’s reading is centered on absolute loyalty to God while being in the presence of temptation to follow idols, false prophets, or even family members that have gone astray.
In Deuteronomy 13, the Israelites are commanded to use careful discernment and know that even if a prophecy or wonder comes true, if it directs worship away from the Lord, it is a test of their devotion. The false prophets can often duplicate the signs and wonders by power given to them by Satan. The Lord permitted false prophet in order to test the Israelites and allow them to see themselves for themselves. By resisting the temptation to follow false gods, they would strengthen their faith and increase their love for God. In closing of Deuteronomy 13, many radical steps were required to keep the nation of Israel from pagan corruption, emphasizing the importance of guarding the community.
The remainder of today’s reading reemphasizes what we previously read on Day 50. Holiness in daily life, generous giving, and joyful worship. God’s people are meant to be set apart, this is reflected in dietary restrictions, tithes, and special care for the poor and vulnerable. The year of cancelling debts reminds us to be generous rather than stingy and selfish. Instead they are to trust God to bless their obedience. The instructions for Passover, Festival of Weeks, and Festival of Tabernacles encourage celebrating God’s salvation with joy and gratitude, acknowledging God as the Creator, Sustainer, and Provider of the nation.
Is there a friend, influencer, or desire enticing me to put anything before my total devotion and loyalty to God?
Prayer:
Lord, help me love You with all my heart, soul, and mental strength. Give me discernment to reject false messages and the courage to follow You alone. May my life reflect Your holiness in how I live and care for others. Amen.
